Another barge sinks in Nile (Egypt) – oil spill 2
Less than two weeks after a river boat sank and spilled oil into Egypt’s Nile River, a second barge has sank near the same spot close to Aswan in southern Egypt, the Egyptian official MENA news agency reported.

Egypt goes after plastic bags
An Egyptian environmental organization has launched a campaign against the country’s largest supermarket chain for the end of plastic bags along the Red Sea. The Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Agency, which works mainly on environmental issues in the Red Sea, believes the use of plastic bags can be greatly curtailed in Egypt in an effort to promote environmental sustainability and a greener country.
Egypt – Fuel spill fouls Nile River
A spill of around 100 tons of diesel into the Nile River has forced Egyptian authorities to shut down four water purification stations as a precaution to prevent contamination. The spill resulted from the partial sinking of a barge owned by the state’s Nile Co. for River Transportation that was docking in the city of Aswan, 650 miles south of Cairo, because of low water levels Saturday. It further degrades an Nile River basin already damaged by overuse, pollution and drought.
Luxor ancient burial chamber – Egypt news
Egyptian Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni announced on Wednesday the discovery of a 2,800-year-old burial chamber which belongs to a priest named Karakhamun from 25th Dynasty (755 B.C.). According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Culture, the chamber was uncovered during conservation and restoration work on the west bank of Luxor by an Egyptian-American expedition.
Egypt Alexandria – attempt to ban smoking in public places
Alexandria is to be Egypt’s first no smoking city, beginning with a ban on lighting up in government buildings. Egyptians smoke some 19 billion cigarettes each year, prompting concerns for public health. And Egypt is a nation of smokers with traditional shisha water pipes found in many coffee shops, and persuading Egyptians to quit will be a challenge. It is common to find people puffing at cigarettes on the train, in office, even in hospitals.
3,300 year old tomb discovered at Saqqara
Archaeologists have discovered the 3,300 year old tomb of Ptahmes, 19th Dynasty army leader and royal scribe, at Saqqara. The discovery of the tomb dated to the second half of the 19th Dynasty (1203 1186BC) by the Archaeological Faculty of the Cairo University was announced today, putting an end to a 300 year old archaeological riddle.
